The History of Scooby Doo

What do you do when there is a big Great Dane in front of you? Do you get scared? But this does not happen when it is about Scooby doo. He is a fun loving, enthusiastic, a big foodie and extremely coward talking dog. One of the members of the Mystery inc., a gang of teenagers of the animated series Scooby Doo, he is a completely adorable dog. The mystery inc. gang is always after the evil and the monsters all the time to solve the mysteries which prevail in front of them. Though it is always the monsters which get them first.

Initially produced for the Sunday viewers of USA, the original series "Scooby Doo where are you" was a hit when released in 1969 and is run on screen till today. It was earlier telecasted on CBS was produced by the famous Hanna-Barbera productions and were written by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears. Various spin-offs were made by the producers in the show till the year 1997 when it was taken over by Warner Bros. animation. The character of Scooby Doo was designed by Iwao Takamoto.

The cast of the series consist of Scooby Doo along with four other enthusiastic teenagers, Norville "Shaggy" Rogers, Daphne Blake, Fred "Freddie" Jones, and Velma Dinkley. The mystery inc. is incomplete without even one of them as they are a very important part of the gang. Fred is the smart and courageous one, Daphne is the gorgeous and fearless who is always with Fred and they share a good chemistry. Velma is the brain of the gang. She finds most of the clues and draws conclusion which helps find the villains behind the monsters or ghouls as she thinks everything has a rational explanation. Shaggy and Scooby are the ones who always find trouble the fastest. Very scared and coward and ready to run away always, they are bribed by the other members especially Velma by giving them a Scooby Snack, a special type of Dog biscuit which surprisingly even Shaggy loves. Both Shaggy and Scooby are big lovers of food. They all drive a van called Mystery machine which all love and try to catch the monsters. Scooby has some pronunciation issues and tends to start all the words with a letter R like he calls Shaggy as "Raggy" and says "Ruh Roh" instead of "Uh oh" when he gets into trouble.

The first show of the series was "What a night for a Knight" which was telecasted on CBS in 1969 and went on successfully till the year 1976, counting to a total of 350 episodes. After 1976, it was moved to ABC channel where it ran successfully till 1986. Then another series, "A pup named Scooby Doo" was launched which showed little pup Scooby and small teenagers all fighting small scale evils. The updated version," what's new Scooby doo was then launched which ran from 2002 till the year 2006" Due to the big fame of the series, it is aired even today on various channels such as Boomerang and Cartoon network.

In between the series, some new series were also launched which consisted of new characters such as Scrappy Doo who is the nephew of Scooby, small but much more courageous in nature. Then there is Scooby Dum, who is the cousin of Scooby. These additional characters bring fun and even more adventure as they all fight the crime together and are loved by the Scooby lovers and fans.

In 1969, many parent run organizations were already complaining about the violence which was shown on Sunday morning shows, most of them being the Hanna-barbera animation shows such as Jonny Quest, Space ghosts and others, most of which were virtually cancelled by the parent pressure as they were thought to be quite disturbing for the young minds. Fred Silverman, head of CBS wanted to air some show which would revitalize the Sunday morning and also please his viewers. Hanna barbera took this task and came out with a new series called Mystery five. It consisted of 4 youth and a dog who solved mysteries concerning zombies and other ghosts. The producers then decided after a period of time to rechristen their show as well as the gang members and named it "Scooby doo, where are you". This is how the whole concept of the talking Great Dane was born. Loved by all in a small duration of time, it was a huge success. Fred was pleased as this show was less frightening and more comedic. This show is much similar to Enid Blyton's Famous Five which also consisted of 4 youth and a dog.

The original voice artist for Scooby doo in 1969 was Don Messick. The theme song of the series was written by David Mook and Ben Raleigh. In the year 1972, after almost 25 episodes of half hour duration, the show timings were increased to a full one hour and named "The new Scooby Doo movies". Each episode consisted of a different guest star that would help the gang solve the mystery. After a full 2 seasons and 24 episodes later, the show was shifted on other channels as well where it was rerun successfully all over. It was a huge success all these years and was loved by kids and even adults.

After the success of the cartoon series, Warner Bros also released a feature film in 2002 on Scooby doo. Like the cartoon, it was a huge success and bought over into the box office gross of over $130 million. After the success of the first film, a sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, was released in the year 2004 and it fetched a total of US$84 (€55,98) million. A prequel "Scooby doo in the beginning" is scheduled to be released on local level in DVD in the fall of 2009. It is expected to be as popular as the other works in the series.
